FPD installation project at Kokaral dam

The Executive Board of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in the Republic of Kazakhstan with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) has started the project on designing and installation of fish protection acoustic system at the Kokaral dam.

Today, there are a number of devices for fish protection at water intakes and spillways. According to the principle of operation, such devices can be divided into mechanical, electrical, acoustic, visual-light and air-bubble ones, and the acoustic system is defined for installation on the Kokaral dam as the most mobile, efficient, biologically safe and economically advantageous. On the territory of Kazakhstan such constructions have not been used yet, and the specially created technical council has an opportunity to adapt the installation to the specific conditions and tasks (prevention of fish rolling down to the downstream bank), and upon completion of the FPD installation, the device will be operated for the purpose of further implementation. The project is implemented by the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation.

The project to develop and install a fish protection device at the Kokaral dam, which is being implemented by the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation, is going according to plan. The video tells about the information from the technical council that took place on May 27. Construction and launching of the fish-protection device on the Kokaral dam is planned this year, and in the future the performance of the device and its efficiency will be studied with the purpose of modernization.

Most of the fish have developed hearing, and water is known to be a good conductor of sound. Acoustic fish protection device (FPD) creates a special sound field underwater in the right area, the waves of which affect the soft tissues and swim bladder of fish, making staying in this area uncomfortable. The strength and tonality of the sound are constantly changing, excluding the possibility of adaptation, and the fish swim away from the protected area. 4,058.6 tons or 53.9 million specimens of adult fish are lost annually to the fish stocks from the water discharge without FPD on the Kokaral dam. Symbols: 1 – fish-protection device; 2 – upstream of the dam; 3 – dam; 4 – floating supports; 5 – coastal mooring.
