Within the framework of the visit of Special UN Representative in Central Asia N.Gherman on April 22, 2022 to the Ministry of ecology, geology and natural resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan there was a Round table carried out with a topic “Issues and perspectives of efficient water resources use in Kazakhstan and Central Asia: development of international legal frameworks of cooperation”. Deputy Chairman of Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan B.T. Kesebayeva, members of Majilis of the Parliament A.A. Skakova, K.T. Erzhan, N.G. Dementieva, M.A. Akhmetova, G.B. Khamzina.
In the process of the Round table there were reports of vice-minister of ecology, geology and natural resources of Kazakhstan, A.L. Shalabekova on the experience of Kazakhstan of using and protecting water resources of Transboundary Rivers: history, conclusions and prospects”. Ms. Nataliya German, the Special UN General Secretary Representative on Central Asia on the role of the Regional center for preventive diplomacy of UN in providing water security in Central Asia as well as Mr. Marat Narbayev, deputy director of the International Fund for saving the Aral Sea in the Republic of Kazakhstan on regional cooperation in the Aral Sea basin presented their reports.
During the discussions participants of the Round table expressed concern of reduces water reserves and water availability in the region in the face of climate change and decrease of river flow. They have agreed with an opinion on the necessity to activate measures on further strengthening of cooperation with Central Asian states on water use, including by the attraction of the capacity of the Regional center of preventive diplomacy of UN to support regional cooperation of CA states in water, energy, and environment and climate areas.
As a result of the meeting, a resolution was adopted.
