Ulytau-Aral Expedition conducted scientific research
More than 4 thousand km lasted the route of the 12-day scientific research expedition called “Ulytau-Aral”, which started on June 15 in Astana. Participants of the expedition shared their scientific observations and discoveries during an important geographical journey today in the CCS during the briefing.
As members of the Kazakhstan National Geographic Society QazaqGeo noted, they organized this expedition in order to attract international and national attention to the problem of the Aral Sea. As you know, this object is interesting for research not only for scientists-biologists, geographers, metrologists, but also for researchers in other fields. Photographers, journalists, and bloggers took part in this expedition. Thanks to the materials they received, they created an interesting media product.
– For their part, scientists who conducted hydrobiological studies of phytoplankton in the Aral Sea, who could provide accurate data on those processes of restoring life inside the water, researchers of desertification processes using modern GPS and Gis-system methods. Thanks to these technologies, it will be possible in future to conduct research, and to monitor how far the desert recedes or descends, “said the head of the expedition, the deputy director of the international and scientific projects, Saulet Sakenov.
Within the framework of the expedition, a memorandum of cooperation was signed with the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, which in future will implement projects on the problem area, as well as attract enthusiasts of their work.
The research expedition completed its work on June 26. As planned, the water was withdrawn in advance for further hydrobiological research. The results are planned to be used to obtain a National Geographic grant, aimed at further hydrobiological research. In addition, a new tourist route was formed, which in the future is planned to be reflected in the pocket book guide for the Ulytau region.
As the candidate of geographical sciences, director of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, Executive Board in Kazakhstan Bolat BEKNIYAZ stated, built in 2006, the dam on Kokaral helped to create the basis for saving part of the sea and further work on saving the Aral Sea will be continued. Now scientists have recorded a rise in the water level by 3 meters, and there is also a gradual restoration of vegetation and fauna in the Northern Aral.
